ChatGPT Becomes a Shared Workspace for Small Teams
OpenAI's DevDay update lets teams mention @ChatGPT in Slack or Teams, run scheduled team tasks, and share project pages, without buying every seat.
OpenAI's DevDay update, announced September 29, gives Business and Enterprise teams a shared ChatGPT workspace: teammates mention @ChatGPT inside Slack or Teams without their own license, hand recurring work to scheduled team tasks, and keep project files in one shared place called Space.
What shipped
OpenAI's DevDay recap, dated September 29, 2026, groups features built for a team, not one person. Mention @ChatGPT in a Slack channel, thread or DM and it answers using your admin's connected tools or your own, within your own permissions, a Business and Enterprise feature. A teammate without a paid seat still gets an answer in the channel. Team tasks sit on the same plans, delegating recurring work, like a weekly update, to a schedule or a trigger such as a new email or Slack message.
Space is the shared home for a team's project knowledge, bringing Pages and files together for Pro, Business and Enterprise users. Pages is a new document type built for a person and an agent to work on together, on those same plans. The Meetings plugin is still in beta, only on macOS, for Pro and Business, Enterprise coming soon; it takes notes and saves a summary with action items into Space, and the audio is deleted once notes are ready. Collaborative slides, where teammates and agents edit one deck at once and export to PowerPoint or Google Slides, arrive in the next few weeks.
OpenAI also announced dots, a separate always-on agent, the same day. Its own story.
Why an owner should care
Normally, every teammate who wants ChatGPT needs a paid seat, so the owner decides who gets one. @ChatGPT in Slack or Teams changes that: your team already lives in one of those apps, and anyone in the right channel can pull an answer with no license bought for them, as long as the plan is Business or Enterprise. Team tasks do the same for the paperwork that keeps a shop running, the weekly update that always slips to Friday.
What it looks like inside a shop
Picture a 5 to 30 person AV or trades business on ChatGPT Business. The office manager and field leads @mention ChatGPT inside the team's Slack or Teams channel to check a schedule, a part number or a warranty term, no seat bought for any of them. The weekly job status update, the one that never goes out on time, becomes a team task: set the schedule once, or fire it the moment a new job note lands in Slack. Price sheets and past proposals live in one shared Space, so a Page anyone edits gives the same answer to whoever looks.
What to do this week
- On ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, turn on the Slack or Teams connection and try @ChatGPT in one channel first.
- Pick one recurring report, the weekly status update or job summary, and set it up as a team task.
- Move your price list, warranty terms and standard specs into a shared Space so the team reads from one Page.
- If your crew takes notes by hand, watch the Meetings plugin, still in beta, before building a habit around it.
Questions owners ask
Do I need to buy a ChatGPT seat for every employee?
No, not for @ChatGPT in Slack or Teams. Teammates can add context and get answers there without an individual license, though the plan still needs to be Business or Enterprise.
What actually triggers a team task?
A schedule you set, or an event such as a new email or Slack message landing.
Is the Meetings plugin ready for daily use?
It's still in beta, only on macOS, for Pro and Business, with Enterprise coming soon. Treat it as something to test, not to build a process around yet.
Does this replace Slack or Microsoft Teams?
No. It works inside them, in the same channel or thread your team already uses. If your team leans on a shared AI coworker already, see how xAI's Team Bots compare, and read what AI for AV integrators and smart home companies covers. Source: DevDay 2026 recap, OpenAI, September 29, 2026
