ChatGPT Voice Now Creates Documents and Spreadsheets

OpenAI gave ChatGPT Voice plugins and full Work access on September 23, so a spoken request can build a document and keeps running after the call ends.

OpenAI put plugins inside ChatGPT Voice on September 23 and gave Voice full access to ChatGPT Work, so a spoken request can now create a document, a spreadsheet or a presentation, touch a connected app, or start a browser task, and if the call ends first the job keeps working in text.

What shipped

OpenAI's release notes, dated September 23, 2026, describe the update in one line: use plugins in Voice and get work done by speaking.

Live now supports plugins across web, iOS and Android, and whatever plugins and connected apps are already turned on for an account work the same way inside a spoken conversation, with written responses still showing in the chat as the conversation continues.

Voice also moved into ChatGPT Work, on web and mobile. There, a spoken request can create a document, build a spreadsheet, put together a presentation, use a connected app, or carry out a multi-step job that needs a browser. End the call before the task is done, and the unfinished piece keeps running and continues in text.

Why an owner should care

Most of what keeps a small business owner from using AI day to day is not the tool. It is the keyboard. Typing a prompt means stopping and sitting down, and most of an owner's day happens standing up, walking a site, driving between appointments.

Voice with plugins and Work access closes that gap. The request does not wait for a desk. It gets said, and it gets built, and if the moment ends before the work does, the work does not end with it.

What it looks like inside a shop

An AV or smart home integrator rarely spends the day at a desk. There is a truck, a job site, a client walkthrough.

Picture an owner driving away from a job where the scope just changed. Instead of pulling over to type it up, he opens ChatGPT Work on his phone and talks through what the client added, what it touches, what it costs. ChatGPT builds the change-order summary as a document while he drives. If the call drops before it finishes, the draft keeps building and is waiting, done, by the time he is back at the shop.

A landscaper dictating a revised estimate from a driveway gets the same lift, and so does a contractor talking through a follow-up email between two walkthroughs. None of it replaces judgment about pricing or scope, but the drafting no longer waits for a chair. What to do this week

  • If Work is already on the account, turn on Voice and test it on one real task: dictate a change order or a follow-up email between two stops.
  • Check which connected apps already show up in a Voice conversation, then connect one more so a spoken request can touch real data.
  • On Free or Go, open Voice in Chat and test the plan's existing plugins before deciding whether Work is worth adding.

Questions owners ask

Does using Voice this way cost extra?

No separate charge is described. Voice in Chat runs inside whatever plugin limits your plan already has, and Voice in Work runs on the app connections, permissions and usage limits already set for your Work account.

What happens if I lose signal before the task is done?

It does not stop with the call. An unfinished job in Work keeps running after Voice ends and continues in text, so a request can start mid-drive and finish as a draft picked up later.

Do I need to already be on ChatGPT Work?

Voice inside Work needs both Voice and Work access. Voice inside regular Chat is open to Free and Go too. See also ChatGPT Now Drafts and Edits Inside Microsoft Word. Source: ChatGPT release notes, September 23, 2026
