ChatGPT Now Drafts and Edits Inside Microsoft Word

OpenAI put ChatGPT inside Microsoft Word on September 17, free plan included, so owners can draft and revise documents without leaving the page.

OpenAI put ChatGPT inside Microsoft Word on September 17, live in a sidebar on every plan including Free. It turns rough notes into a first draft, condenses a long document, reworks a paragraph you highlight, and straightens up headings and layout, all without leaving the page. Word joins Excel and PowerPoint under the same Microsoft add-in ChatGPT already shipped.

What shipped

OpenAI's release notes, dated September 17, 2026, describe ChatGPT for Word as a sidebar that drafts, shortens, reworks and formats text inside the document. Word is now the third Microsoft app to get this, after Excel and PowerPoint, through one shared add-in.

Every ChatGPT plan gets it, Free included, running on that plan's normal token limits. On paid plans, Word draws from the same shared allowance as Codex and other premium features.

Business, Enterprise and Edu work differently. A workspace admin flips Word access on or off in the ChatGPT admin console, and the Microsoft 365 admin has to allow the add-in too. It turns on by default for those three plans starting October 1, 2026, billed at token-based API rates against the plan's rate card.

To get started: install the ChatGPT add-in from Microsoft Marketplace, open ChatGPT inside Word, and sign in.

Why an owner should care

Most owners already write in Word. Proposals, scopes of work, contracts, client letters, all of it lives in the same document they have had open for years. Every AI writing tool before this asked for a detour, a browser tab open on the side, text pasted in, an answer copied back out.

This closes that gap. The draft, the revision and the document stay in one place, and that matters more than a feature list, because the tool that adds a step gets abandoned while the tool that removes one gets used.

What it looks like inside a shop

An AV or trades owner writing a scope of work drops walkthrough notes into Word and asks ChatGPT for a first draft. A change order comes back with three lines added by hand, and instead of retyping the document, the owner selects the new section and asks ChatGPT to match the tone and formatting of the rest.

A proposal cover letter gets tightened before it goes out. None of it replaces judgment about pricing or scope, but the draft and the cleanup both get faster. Any service business running its paperwork through Word gets the same lift: a contractor's change orders, a consultant's statement of work, a landscaper's estimate.

What to do this week

  • Install the ChatGPT add-in from Microsoft Marketplace and open it inside a document already in progress.
  • Test it on one recurring document, a proposal template or a standard scope of work, and see how well it drafts a first pass from rough notes.
  • If running Business, Enterprise or Edu, check the admin console now instead of waiting for the October 1 default, and decide who gets access before it turns on for everyone.

Questions owners ask

Does this cost extra?

On Free, Plus and Pro, no, it runs inside your existing token limits. On Business, Enterprise and Edu, usage is billed at token-based API rates against the plan's rate card.

Do I need my IT person to turn this on?

On a personal or Plus/Pro plan, no, it is available today after installing the add-in. On Business, Enterprise or Edu, a workspace admin enables it in the ChatGPT admin console, and the Microsoft 365 admin has to allow the add-in too. It turns on by default October 1, 2026, if nobody has touched the setting. If the real bottleneck is the proposal sitting half-finished for a week, that is worth fixing separately.
