Shopify Canvas Lets You Build a Store by Chatting

Shopify Canvas lets merchants redesign a store by chatting with Sidekick. It is early access, desktop only, and limited to certain stores.

By Juan Camou, Obsessed AI

Shopify announced Canvas on October 1, 2026. It is a design surface where you describe changes to Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent, and watch your store rebuild as you talk. It is early access, open only to certain stores, desktop only, and rolling out over the coming days. Shopify names no price.

What shipped

Canvas is a new workspace inside Shopify for designing a store. Instead of building page by page, you see all your templates at once, like a map of the whole shop. You can click a block and change it by hand, or tell Sidekick what you want and watch the edit appear.

Shopify's help page says you can also have Sidekick build a new theme from a description of your brand, and try changes on a copy of your theme first. Before it hands work back, Sidekick checks its own code and reviews screenshots. Ben Sehl, Shopify's Director of Product, says an entrepreneur can now build "a fully custom store in twenty minutes."

Take that as Shopify's claim. I have not tested it.

Why an owner should care

A storefront redesign has always meant a freelancer, a template you fight with, or a weekend you do not have. Canvas moves that job to a conversation. You say what the page should feel like, you see it, you say what is wrong, and it changes.

The honest caveat is access. This is early access for certain stores. You may open your Themes page and find nothing. Shopify also says Canvas is not replacing the existing editor, so plan on both existing side by side for a while.

What it looks like inside a shop

This is not an AV integrator story directly. It matters to a specific kind of owner: someone who sells parts, cables, mounts, remotes, or branded accessories through a Shopify store next to the service business.

Those shops tend to look like they were set up once and left alone. A product page that is clumsy, a collection that does not match the brand, a homepage that still shows last year's offer. With Canvas, that owner could describe the page they want, check it on desktop, and fix it without booking anyone.

The same goes past AV. A plumbing supplier with an online parts counter, or a designer selling a product line, has the same problem: nobody has time to design the shop. If you want the bigger picture of AI for service companies, start with AI for AV integrators and smart home companies. For another no-code tool that works the same way, a plain instruction and a visible result, see Workspace Studio and no-code automation.

What to do this week

  • Log in to your Shopify admin on a desktop, open the Themes page, and see whether Canvas appears. If it does not, check again in a few days, since the rollout runs over the coming days.
  • If you have access, start on a copy of your theme, not your live store.
  • Write down the three pages you like least, with one sentence each on what is wrong. That brief makes Sidekick far more useful than "make it better."

Questions owners ask

How much does Canvas cost?

Shopify does not say. Neither the announcement nor the help page names a price, so check your own plan in the admin before assuming it is included.

Can I use it on my phone?

No. The help page says Canvas is desktop only.

Will it replace my current theme editor?

Not yet. Shopify says it is still early and does not replace the existing editor. Expect gaps while it matures. Source: Introducing Canvas, Shopify, October 1, 2026
