Workspace Studio Adds No-Code Automation and Webhooks
Google added custom starters, custom steps and third-party integrations to Workspace Studio, reaching Business Starter plans.
Google shipped a real automation builder inside Workspace Studio on September 17: custom starters, custom steps, and beta connections to tools like HubSpot, QuickBooks and Slack, tied together with webhooks. Everything ships off, and an admin has to turn it on. It reaches Business Starter, the plan most small shops already pay for.
What shipped
Workspace Studio is Google's builder for stringing Workspace actions into a flow. The September 17 update adds four pieces: custom starters (your own real-time trigger instead of a preset), custom steps (your own logic, including Apps Script code), beta third-party integrations for Asana, Confluence, HubSpot, Jira, Mailchimp, QuickBooks, Salesforce and Slack, and webhooks for reaching a tool outside that list.
Nothing turns on by itself. A Workspace admin flips it on in the Admin Console, and the rollout is staged: admin settings landed September 17, Rapid Release accounts get it starting September 21, and Scheduled Release accounts start September 30, finishing over the following two weeks. One piece is held back from the entry plan: the webhook URL allowlist, which manages which outside addresses a webhook can call, needs Business Plus or higher.
Why an owner should care
Most owner-run shops have no one on staff who can write an integration. This puts the builder inside the tool the team already opens every day. HubSpot, QuickBooks, Slack and Asana are exactly the stack a lot of $1M to $10M service businesses run on right now.
What it looks like inside a shop
Picture an AV or smart home shop tracking sales in HubSpot and billing in QuickBooks. Today, moving a deal from "won" to an invoice is a person copying names and numbers between two screens. A custom starter watching for a HubSpot change, paired with a custom step on the QuickBooks side, is the kind of link Studio's new pieces are built to close. A service business outside AV gets the same shape of win. A plumbing or electrical outfit running Jira for job tickets and Slack for the crew could fire a starter when a ticket status changes and post a step where the team already looks. Nothing here requires ripping out existing software.

- Check whether your Workspace admin has turned the new automation options on. It is a five-minute setting, not a project.
- Check your everyday tools against Google's eight integrations: Asana, Confluence, HubSpot, Jira, Mailchimp, QuickBooks, Salesforce, Slack.
- Pick one manual handoff between two of those tools, the kind a person does by hand every week, and write down what a starter and a step would need to replace it.
- Expect the option to start appearing September 21 on Rapid Release, or September 30 on Scheduled Release, with the slower track finishing up to two weeks later.

Do I need a developer to build one of these automations?
Not for a basic flow. Custom starters and most steps are built inside Studio's own editor. A step that needs real logic can run on Apps Script, which is code, so a complex flow still benefits from someone comfortable scripting, even if that is an hour of freelance help rather than a hire.
Which Workspace plan do I need?
Business Starter, Standard and Plus all get it, along with Enterprise and Education tiers. Only the webhook URL allowlist, a narrower setting for which outside addresses a webhook can reach, needs Business Plus or higher.
When will I actually see this in my account?
Admins could start enabling it September 17. Rapid Release accounts should see it by September 21.
