Gemini Skills Replace Gems: What Owners Should Do
Google is replacing Gemini Gems with Skills, reusable instructions you save once. Gems are retired starting this November and migrate automatically.
Google announced on September 30 that Gemini Skills are replacing Gems. A skill is a task you teach Gemini once and call up by name whenever you need it. Gems stop being supported for personal accounts starting this November, and your existing Gems convert to skills for you.
What shipped
Skills are live in Gemini chat now, and Google says they are open to every Google AI subscription tier, for users 18 and older. Under-18 access is listed as coming soon. The post does not say whether free accounts are included.
You run one by typing a slash and its name. You can stack more than one skill in the same chat, for example a writing-style skill next to a brand-rules skill. Reference files work from day one. Drive and Gemini Notebook files come later, Google says.
Gemini can also do the building for you. Tell it to turn a chat that went well into a skill. After that, it can apply the skill when a new prompt matches the task.
Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit and education accounts follow in the coming weeks, per Google.
Why an owner should care
If you built Gems, you have a dated clock now. If you never touched Gems, this is the easy version: save how you want a task done, and stop retyping it.
Most owners repeat the same ten tasks. A saved skill means the 20th version comes out like the first, and a new hire can run it.
The same instinct sits behind Workspace Studio: write the job down once, let the tool repeat it. For the bigger picture on putting this to work, start with what we build for AV and smart home businesses.
What it looks like inside a shop
Take an AV or trades business with a lead tech and an office manager.
- Walkthrough notes to scope summary. The tech pastes rough notes after a site visit. The skill holds your format: rooms, systems, open questions, what the client said they want. Out comes a clean summary the team can read in a minute.
- Proposal follow-up in your voice. Save a few of your own past follow-ups as reference files. The skill drafts the next one the way you write, short and direct. You read it, change a line, send it.
None of this replaces your judgment on price or scope. It gives you a solid first draft.
What happens to existing Gems
Google says it will move your Gems into skills automatically when Gems go away. Support ends starting this November for personal accounts, March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise and nonprofit, and June 2027 for Workspace education.
Google's release notes point to a help center page on the move. Check what comes out before you depend on it.
What to do this week
- List the Gems you or your team actually use. Skip the ones nobody opens.
- Pick one repeat task, like a proposal follow-up. Start from a chat that went well and ask Gemini to save it as a skill.
- Add two or three of your best real examples as reference files, then run it on a live job and edit the result.
- If you are on Workspace, check your admin settings in a few weeks, since rollout is still coming.
Questions owners ask
Do I lose my Gems?
Not on the day. Google says it will migrate them into skills automatically when Gems are retired, except Gems made in Google Labs, which will not move over. Check the result once it happens.
Do I need a paid plan?
Google's post says Skills are open to all Google AI subscription tiers, and it does not say whether a free account with no subscription gets them. On the free version, check Gemini for skills before you plan around it. Workspace accounts follow in the coming weeks.
Is this different from a custom prompt I paste in?
